Rain Falls, Earth Rises
This piece is part of my Rain Falls, Earth Rises collection.
This collection was inspired by a Japanese proverb that my best friend, Sayaka, quietly said after overcoming one of the most difficult experiences of her life:
“Ame futte ji katamaru” (雨降って地固まる) — After the rain, the earth becomes firmer.
The proverb comes from the way heavy rain can leave the ground muddy and unstable at first. But once the rain passes, the soil settles and becomes firmer, stronger, and more stable. It is often used to describe how, after difficulties, conflicts, or hardships, life, circumstances, or relationships can become stronger and more grounded than they were before.
Three years ago, in the summer, I saw Sayaka break down in tears for the first time in the 25 years I had known her. She had always been someone who remained strong and composed, no matter what life brought her way. Seeing her completely overwhelmed by pain was deeply heartbreaking to me.
She was going through one of the most painful experiences of her life. And yet, she eventually found her way through it—and went on to make a long-held dream come true.
Her journey deeply touched me.
After experiencing pain and shedding many tears, perhaps life can become richer.
Perhaps the ground we stand on can become stronger and more stable.
I created this piece to express the beauty I see in the way she has lived her life.
About the Color
The glaze represents heavy rain pouring down onto the earth, as well as tears.
I wanted to capture a sense of movement in the glaze—the way water flows and gathers in the center of the piece, like a small puddle left behind after the rain.
I hope you enjoy the subtle movement, depth, and variations in the glaze that make each piece unique.
About the Shape
The shape incorporates the circle, a form Sayaka has always loved.
Its soft, rounded form also carries the feeling of a gentle hug—a quiet wish that, no matter what life brings her way, her life will continue to become richer, fuller, and more beautiful.
